Residential Services Provided |
Our residential programs include the following services:
Education - Through a partnership with East Dakota Educational Cooperative, we have an on-site school available for boys to earn credit towards graduation. The McCrossan Boys Ranch School is accredited. GED courses and public school placement are also available to boys who meet criteria.
Group Sessions - All boys participate in daily group sessions to address their current issues. Anger management, corrective thinking, victim empathy and other issues are addressed through these groups.
Psychological Evaluation - Each boy may undergo an array of psychological tests during the initial phase of placement in order to establish a working diagnosis to identify his treatment needs.
Individual Therapy - The Ranch has relationships with several local agencies including Great Plain Psychological Services, Sioux Falls Psychological Services and Lutheran Social Services, to provide individual counseling to boys identified as being in need of those services.
Chemical Dependency Services - Through a partnership with Keystone Treatment Center the Ranch offers several levels of programming and groups in this area. Services include educational groups, groups for boys who come from families that have been impacted by chemical abuse, groups for boys with a history of experimentation or misuse of chemicals, and referrals to outpatient chemical dependency treatment.
Psychiatric Care - Boys needing psychiatric care can have their medications monitored or their progress evaluated by our psychiatrist.
Restorative Justice - For those boys who have court ordered restitution or community service hours the Ranch strives to make it a priority to fulfill these obligations while in placement.
Equine Programming - McCrossan Boys Ranch is a working horse ranch. The boys have the opportunity to work therapeutically with the animals under the careful supervision of expert staff. McCrossan Boys Ranch has two licensed equine therapists. Horsemanship, hitch trips and 4-H is also available to the boys.
Moral Development - The Ranch offers a variety of activities designed to enhance the moral and spiritual development of the boys.
Recreational Offerings - The Ranch utilizes a variety of on and off site recreational facilities to provide a healthy and appropriate recreational outlet for the boys.
Independent Living Program - McCrossan Boys Ranch has an Independent Living Preparation Program available to those boys who meet the criteria (ages 17-20). The Ranch has several on-campus apartments in which the boys learn skills to become independent. Job placement and higher education assistance is emphasized.
Chaplain Program - McCrossan Boys Ranch has a part-time chaplain available during evening hours for boys requesting the service. Sunday evening worship services and Fellowship of Christian Athletes is also offered.
Native American Cultural Diversity Program - McCrossan Boys Ranch has a Native American Cultural Advisor who mentors the boys. Trips to Powwow’s and other cultural events are also offered. The Ranch also has an inipi (sweat lodge) for the boys who would like to participate in on-campus sweats offered by our advisor.
McCrossan Boys Ranch offers several alternative programs for boys that are in the care or supervision of the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) or South Dakota Department of Corrections (DOC).
Crisis Stabilization - Program is for DSS/DOC youth (10-18 years old) that are needing a short-term stabilization period. They may be experiencing difficulties at home or at school. The goal is to keep a boy out of a longer-term placement outside the home.
Short Term Assessment Services - This program is designed to give DSS/DOC a comprehensive assessment through evaluations, observation and monitoring of the youth (10-18) in a structured setting. A report will be generated to will give recommendations for services to address identified family and individual needs and appropriate level of care.
Community Reintegration - The emphasis of this program is to provide a short-term transitional period for a youth who is discharged from a psychiatric residential treatment facility or other residential options. The goal is to prepare a boy to be successful when he returns home and to the community.
Respite Care - A planned, short-term respite placement for parents, kinship providers, guardians, or foster parents. This is arranged by DSS or DOC and is designed to assist the caregiver when other resources are not available.
